Community & Cultural
This page lists online resources and pro bono projects for advocacy help for special interest groups or nonprofit and charitable organizations. (We regret that the Toronto walk-in centre does not help in these areas.)
Pro Bono Projects
Volunteer Lawyers Service for Charitable and Nonprofit Organizations
Volunteer Lawyers Service is a registered project of Pro Bono Law Ontario that offers free legal support to eligible charitable and nonprofit organizations in Ontario that otherwise could not afford the services of a lawyer. VLS matches community agencies with volunteer lawyers who can help with a range of services such as incorporation, charitable registration, board governance, contracts, or trademark registrations.
South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario
SALCO's mandate is to provide access to justice for low-income South Asians in the Greater Toronto area. As a specialty clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario, SALCO provides advice, brief services, and legal representation in various areas of poverty law
Visual Artists Legal Clinic of Ontario
This pro bono project provides free legal support to visual artists who are members of CARFAC Ontario (Canadian Artists' Representation). Services are provided through the law firm, Torys. Lawyers assist artists with questions relating to copyright, commercial contracts, labour law, commercial leases, tenants rights, or incorporating a business.
Lawyers for Aboriginal Artists
This pro bono program helps Aboriginal artists secure a livelihood by providing legal support for their creative efforts. The project offers free legal assistance to Aboriginal artists (including performers, artisans, writers, and fina artists) and arts organizations across Ontario. Legal services are provided through the Toronto offices of Gowling LaFleur Henderson and supported by Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto. Lawyers are available to answer questions about copyright, review contracts, help artists set up their businesses, and secure payment for work done.
